BRITAIN is to send £5million of aid to rebels in Syria — but will not arm them.
According to
Thesun Foreign Secretary William Hague announced the move yesterday as part of efforts to topple President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
The money will pay for vital medical equipment, water purification kits and radios. Body armour could also be provided for those "carrying out vital work in the crossfire”.
PM David Cameron also repeated calls for Assad — who has ordered the killing of thousands of innocent Syrians — to stand down
Mr Hague said the current situation in the war-ravaged country was "an affront to the conscience of humanity”. He said: "We will expand our support to the Syrian people and the Syrian political opposition with an extra £5million in non-lethal practical assistance. This will help protect unarmed opposition groups, human rights activists and civilians from some of the worst of the violence.”
He stressed the UK would stop short of providing the Free Syrian Army with weapons. However, Labour warned against inflaming an already tense situation.
Shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander said: "Given that Syria has descended into civil war, the Government needs to act with real care. The international community should be focused on de-escalating the violence.”
Mr Cameron last night insisted Assad "has got to go”. He said: "One way or another we need to make sure Assad goes and we give the people of Syria a fresh start.
"We cannot intervene militarily. But can we help to try and bring about transition in Syria, whether by acting at the UN or assisting the Syrian opposition? We can and we should.
